Down Memory Lane

On the sunny morning of October 28th 2006 when former U.S. President Jimmy Carter rode into the premises of Pirojshanagar, he was visibly overwhelmed with nostalgia. This was the place where four decades ago his beloved mother Ms. Lillian Carter had worked as a volunteer of Peace Corps to the service of humanity. In his own words he came here to revive the memory of his mother Ms. Lillian Carter who always fondly remembered her stay at Pirojshahnagar during 1966-67 for the symbiosis of the values that the Carters and Godrejites stood for, the clean environment, the bonhomie that prevailed between the people and most important the human atmosphere that prevails in this locality.

It was wonderful on Mr. Carter’s part to visit Pirojshanagar to meet the Godrej family and others who were associated with his mother. he spent a few minutes in the flat at our Hillside Colony where Mrs. Carter had lived for short while. “The place looks exactly like my mother described” Mr. Carter remarked.

Hello from Mrs. Pheroza J. Godrej

The Families together

At the conference hall at Plant 11, Mr. Carter and family spent time with Mr. & Mrs. J.N. Godrej, Mr. A.B. Godrej, Mr. & Mrs. N.B. Godrej, Mrs. Smita Crishna, along with Dr. Bhatia & Dr. Mrs. Bhatia, Mrs. Sudha Ambedkar, Mr. Raja Perumal (of the dispensary), Ms. Shirin Choksey (Ex-Principle the Udyachal Primary School) Mrs. Aloo Modawala (of the Pragati Kendra), and Dr. Madhavi Pethe (daughter of Late Mr. Vinod of the garden department).

Ms. Smita Crishna having a word with Mr. Carter as Lt. Col Prabhu looks on

Addressing friends

Mr. Carter told our doctors Ganshyam and Pushpa (nee Meena) Bhatia that his mother had specifically asked him to be with them whenever he visited India. In fact, for Mrs. Carter that Bhatias were like her own children. She had on her return from Vikhroli, told her son “I have left your younger brother Ganshyam at Vikhroli.”

Engrossed in conversation with Dr. Bhatia and Dr. Mrs. Bhatia

While leaving Pirojshanagar after lunch with Godrej family and other invitees the distinguished guest appeared to be very happy for having accomplished a long cherished dream. When Mr. Godrej informed him that I had postponed my premature retirement because of this visit, Mr. Carter surprisingly asked “Colonel, you extended your stay because of me?”. These are probably some of the most memorable words of my life so far.

“He postponed his departure because of your visit”

Lt. Col. (Retd.) K.S. Prabhu SC.

Speaking to the Consumers... EON Media Campaign

After a series of dealer launches and press meets to launch the new range of Frost Free Refrigerators: Eon, Appliance Division launched the media campaign for the same in October.

A 360° campaign was implemented to target the end consumers.

Press ads were used to announce the launch of the new range and highlight the seven unique features of the range: Cool Shower Technology, Swivel Shelf, Poly Bag Suspenders, Freezer Air Current Design, 2.5 L Aqua Space, Coloured Interiors and Humidity Jog Dial.

The TV campaign was based on the insight that women often don’t speak their mind. The campaign underscores the point that Godrej understands what women think and hence has designed a refrigerator that they desired - stylish outside and smart inside.

Four radio ads were developed – each highlighting one key feature of Eon. The ads used humour to grab attention. Done very creatively, each ad personified the food kept in the refrigerator and the problems it faced in the usual refrigerator. So while one ad used ‘Pumpkin complaining about the lack of space in the Veg. tray, a 2.5 L Cola bottle complaining about lack of space and so on.

An extensive outdoor campaign was done in key cities – with headlines like ‘Don’t blink and Drive’,Keep your eyes on the road’ and ‘Blame us for the Traffic Jam’ – the outdoor campaign was designed to project the stylish look of the new range.

Mumbai - Mahim

Delhi - Metro Train

Retail Display was done innovatively using side flanges on the products to highlight the key features and attract customers at the shop floor.

Thus, a multi pronged strategy was employed to target the customer at all touch points.

But this is not all – the Appliance Division has another surprise in store for Christmas. More on that, in the next issue of Change…

Lonavala - Where 4 Ds and 4 As Took the Team by Storm

While all the Stores in charge and the entire HO team decided to meet at Lonavala from 06th Nov to 9th Nov 06 to work out a strategy on how we (the Retailing Lifespace stores) should go about achieving our milestone of 100 crores for the this financial year, I was undertaking training for our Lifespace Stores spread across South India.

Come Home to 100

During my product training programme in the south, I made it a point to talk to the Stores in charge available and was pleased beyond words to know that the Team were charged to the hilt to make this milestone journey of ‘Come home to 100’ a reality.

All of them said that the programme was unique, a class apart and filled them with 4 Ds and 4 As.  When I probed them about these feelings I discovered that the team felt Delighted as they were Appreciated... their desire to go all out was punctuated by the fact they could  feel the  individual Attention given to each one of them.  Their Desire to turn every corner for increasing their sales were founded on the fact that they were shown a lot of Affection and were keen to Dream a telepathic dream as one family who felt Accepted  like never before and felt that nothing will stop them in their Dare to Do the ‘impossible’. I was spell bound as I felt that this short 3 days programme had transformed our team members into Giants in their roles as Coach and advisers.

When I enquired about what was special about the programme, they all echoed the same sentiments ... they said the mantra was the stretching exercise demonstrated by none other than our brave bosses at the helm. “Our leaders showed us that where there is a will, there is a way”.

In the light of the Lonavala programme, the training programme was looked at differently as each one of the team members loved doing what they did.  I am sure that if all of us continue in this vein then the words of Oscar Wilde “if you love your job then you will have not worked a single day” would enter the soul of each one of us.

The race is on, the path is no longer strewn with hardships. Stretching is the name of the game and to reach 100 we will strain every vein.

Mr. D.K. He said that Godrej is steadily progressing in its continued efforts to leverage its competencies, to meet the varied demands/requirements of its wide spectrum of customers - notably those from overseas. Mr. Sharma also cited examples of many Companies across the globe, who are targetting exports by focusing on international markets/demands. He concluded his speech by reaffirming the commitment of all employees of Godrej, and assured that Godrej will scale even greater heights in the years to come.
Mr. DK Sharma addressing the audience

Mr. Sharma, then, had a pleasant surprise in store for three of our businesses, who have a record percentage of their Turnovers through Exports - viz., Process Equipment Division, Material Handling Equipment Division, and the Storage Solutions Group. Mr. Sharma requested Shri J.N. Godrej to present a buoquet to Mr. Allen Antao, for PED's outstanding performance of achieving 80% of their Turnover through Exports. (Business Heads of MHE and SSG could not be present at the function).

Mr. Anil Verma - our Executive Vice President & Head of Personnel & Administration - shared his thoughts in line with the theme. He too emphasised that 'going global' was the need of the hour. He said, having operations and presence in various countries across the globe, adds to the strength of the Company, in terms of its capability to compete globally. And added, that while it gives us pride and pleasure when we see Godrej scaling newer heights, we do owe this to the efforts put-in by our predecessors – who were our Great Visionaries. He also emphasised that every one of us should strive to sustain the growth, by setting forth such examples of hardwork, commitment and dedication, which the oncoming generation will be proud of, and will motivate our successors.
Mr. Anil Verma addressing the audience

Representatives of the CWC and GBSS – Mr. Digambar Parulekar and Mr. Rambali Yadav, respectively – urged the workforce from GBSS to join hands with the Management, in making Godrej a really Global Organisation. They assured that every GBSS and CWC member will strive hard with integrity and dedication, to realise the Corporate Vision of "Going Global - the Godrej way".

Mr. Rambali Yadav sharing his thoughts

After a 'Motivation Song' by Morvekar and team, came the moment which the audience was eagerly awaiting - and that was, to listen to Shri Jamshyd Godrej's golden words, which always has been a treat to our ears.

Mr. Morvekar and Team singing a Motivational Song

While setting the tone for the future, Shri Godrej spoke in greater detail, of how important it was to ensure our presence in the world map. Parallely, however, he also drew the focus of our minds towards two very important aspects - "Safety" and "Work Practices". He emphasised the vital role of Safety, and mentioned that Safety should become an integral part of every activity being carried out by every employee. Reasons of work-pressure, or urgency – or No reason, for that matter – is valid enough to compromise on Safety. And likewise, Shri Godrej also stressed on the importance of adopting and implementing such high standards of Work Practices in our daily routine, such that whatever activity we carry out, will reflect Quality in its output.

Mr. J.N. Godrej enthralling the audience with his inspiring words

Shri Godrej's speech – powered with vibrant passion and motivation – has always been a great driving force for all of us, and a source of great encouragement to everyone. His words boosted our enthusiasm, and instilled confidence in our minds, to be able to realise every Vision of Godrej and turn them into virtual Reality – which can be seen and felt by every Godrejite.

Mr. Pankaj Bandi performing the role of 'Master of Ceremony'

Compering an event of such significance, is no ordinary feat, and calls for good vocabulary amongst others. Mr. Pankaj Bandi (from Tooling Division) was the 'Master of Ceremony' for this event, and this responsibility was very ably discharged by Mr. Pankaj Bandi.

Mr. Eknath Shinde from CWC concluded the event with Vote of Thanks, acknowledging everyone's efforts in organising this event, and expressing his gratitude on behalf of the Organising Committee.

Leadership Through Technology

O wing to changes in import policy over the last decade and the vast potential in the Indian market, global majors have commenced operations in India through dealers and agents for supply and sale of high security products and solutions. Anticipating the future scenario Locks Division embarked on the introduction of Ultra Technology way back in 1995. Beyond the same, the effort has been on to introduce further new technologies for locking cylinders, recent few examples which include the Ultra Duo and Ultra EXS brands. This enables us not only to provide high security locking solution in Europrofile Mortise Cylinders for the doors, but provide solution for the Mortise segment in the Locks Industry.

Moreover, with the trend in increasing levels of crime and insecurity there will be a growing need for even higher security. To take lead and set the trend in India, we have technical tie-up with EVVA of Austria to produce 3KS patented cylinders which will provide a boost for technological leadership in the lock & key industry. Over and above, by virtue of innovative internal efforts, we have succeeded in creating new products by fusion of mechanical and electronic security technologies which will thwart any attempt by individuals to duplicate or replicate the keys. Moreover, this combi-technology elevates the usp of the Godrej Products and also address the huge potential that lies dormant in the replacement markets for upgrading security on the existing doors. This process is continuous and efforts are on to patent newer technologies which will enable us to scale new heights in the future.

Innovative Ideas

M/S.Bell Atlantic Communications Ltd., our new Godrej Security Equipment products dealer in Kenya has gone all out to advertise Godrej Security Equipment products.  Apart from sending mailers to various important customers and advertising in magazines and newspapers he has painted the Marketing manager’s Maruti van with pictures of several Godrej Security Equipment products. At some places a few prospective clients asked for more details on certain safes painted on the van. The success of this innovative idea, has prompted the Managing Director - Mr.Francis Ikinu to showcase more Godrej products on other vehicles owned by him.

M/S. Bell Atlantic Communications Ltd has printed all their business cards with the Godrej logo on one side. This enables dealers identify themselves as authentic dealers of Godrej products.

In a competitive market, every new idea goes a long way in getting a better share in the market. M/S. Bell Atlantic Communications Ltd wants not only to get a good share in the market but also aims at making Godrej numero uno in Kenya.

Godrej Safe Still Unscathed

A defender plus safe in Bommasandra post office of Bangalore was attacked by burglars, we deputed our technical personnel to assess the damage caused to the safe. It was reported that a massive attempt was made, presumably using different tools and gas cutting attempt on the Safe (Godrej Defender Plus 26 Safe) in use since around 3 years. True testimony to the quality of Defender Safes, the attempt on the safe was futile and there was no loss. The photograph taken at the site is attached. Although there was a severe blow around locking system, our Service Officer was able to open the safe in the presence of officials.

We believe the culprits had adequate time and convenience at their disposal and had a well planned activity. The subject safe is classified as per BIS as Class C, TL-30(D), TLX5-10, FR30. While this kind of safe is what is widely being used in financial sector, of late there is thinking in banking sector to go in for higher grades of Safes. There are 11 classifications for the Safes now and considering the new phenomenon of burglary attempts, it is worthwhile looking at higher grade safes in offices too when safes are used as a stand-alone equipment, i.e. without being inside a ‘strong room’.

In view of the severe damage caused to the front and back of the safe, it has become beyond economical and satisfactory repairs. The only recourse is to replace with similar safe or higher grade safe of equivalent/higher dimension.

Yet another time our trusted quality is proved.
