MILESTONES IN THE MIDDLE EAST

Record Export Order for Godrej Locks
odrej Locks are fast gaining acceptance in the Middle East, thanks to the various initiatives undertaken in the region. Recently, Godrej Locks bagged a record export order from M/s. Shama Traders LLC, its distributor in the United Arab Emirates.

The order, worth U.S. $53,500, was for 20,500 two-lever Mortise locks — enough to fill up a 40-foot container.

Godrej Personal Lockers Boom in Kuwait
espite fierce competition in the international market, Godrej Middle East obtained an order for 1,200 Personal Locker Units from a major construction firm in Kuwait. The order was secured in the face of strict customer specifications, stiff price limitations and tight delivery schedules, not to mention the competition from Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam with their aggressive pricing and matching quality. The Export and Design team at head office extended their full support and enabled us to meet the customer’s specific requirements.

Although this is the first major order ever to be bagged for Personal Locker Units from Kuwait, we are hoping that there will be more to come from other Gulf Cooperation Council countries.

First Mega Pallet Racking Installation in UAE
he Storage Solutions Group (SSG), Exports, won a prestigious order for a Pallet Racking Installation for GMT Logistics. The storage system consisted of 10,102 pallet locations.

GMT Logistics is a major 3PL (third party logistics) company located in Jebel Ali, Dubai. It handles cargo for Panasonic and LG, and also deals with logistics for the Al Futtaim Group, the sole dealer for Toyota in UAE. Our Pallet Racking will be spread over three rooms, i.e. dry storage, Dutch barn and cool store.

It was a real challenge to erect the 9-metre-tall structure outside India for the first time. Manpower is a big concern in Jebel Ali, and we were compelled to use local labour. The labourers provided to us were unskilled dock workers, and getting things done with such a team was a Herculean task.

By working overtime, the installation was nearing completion, when one fine day our customer gave us a shock by giving us a deadline that was not achievable. The customer wanted us to finish the project before the date of inspection by the Jebel Ali Free Zone Authorities (JAFZA), who would issue the certificate to make the facility operational.

Completing the site in the stipulated time was a real challenge. The night before the inspection, we worked through the night with four labourers, and managed to complete the installation down to the smallest detail.

At 9 o’clock the following morning we went to the site and waited for the inspection. At noon, the customer gave us the good news that there was not a single adverse comment regarding the racking. I proudly handed over the site to the customer.

The Show That Was …

he Materials Handling Exhibition is one of the premier bi-annual events organised by Epoc Messe Frankfurt. An exclusive trade event targeted towards logistics and related businesses, this year’s exhibition was held in the World Trade Center, Dubai from 15th to 17th May, 2005.

The exhibition came at a time when we had just increased our employee strength and were planning to have a significant growth and market share in the Middle East. We felt this would be a perfect platform to present Godrej as a strong brand on a par with world leaders, to showcase our capabilities, create awareness and generate inquiries. Senior officials, including H.N. Khambatta, D.K. Jairath, Cawas Dumasia, Sanjay Varghese and Kishore Kumar Pradhan, arrived from India to guide and support the local team and to handle high impact business association prospects.

SSG and the Material Handling Equipment (MHE) Division jointly occupied the large area of 1,200 square feet. We engaged a specialist agency from Bangalore to design the stall and to manage its on-site execution. The outcome was a very professional and impressive-looking stall with the emphasis on Godrej branding and its presence in the Middle East market. On display were the latest range of products from MHE and SSG.

The event was inaugurated by His Highness Sheikh Hasher bin Juma Al Maktoum, Director of the Dubai Department of Information. Ours was one of the few stalls which His Highness visited in person.

There was wide participation at the exhibition from leading companies related to material handling, storage and warehouse management, totalling 80 participants from different countries.

There was a steady flow of visitors on all three days. There were many visitors from other countries like Oman, Maldives, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Pakistan, Spain and some African countries.

Apart from local associates like M/s. Al Dhafir, M/s. Al Malas, M/s. City Diamond, upcountry associates like M/s. Khimji Ramdas from Oman, M/s. KAT from Saudi Arabia, and Guy Michelle from Harell Mallac, Mauritius, also visited our stall. Most of our major competitors took a special interest in our stall.

The vibrancy in the market is reflected by the fact that by the end of the event about 200 enquiry forms were filled up for SSG and MHE!
