hizophora
mucronata is an evergreen
mangrove variety identified by its prominent stilt roots, the pointed
apex of its leaves and numerous black spots on the ventral side of
each leaf. The tree is commonly called the red mangrove because of its
red bark and roots. It is also known as the "pioneer species", because
it is usually one of the first species to establish itself in unstable
areas during forest formation and is then followed by other species.
The wood of the red mangrove is used the world over in
construction, for fish traps, house frames, pilings and poles.
