| The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), together with Godrej & Boyce Mfg. Co. Ltd., has given a major thrust to Green Building activities and we are happy to note that these efforts are bearing rich dividends. Following the example set by the CII-Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre, which won the coveted Platinum award from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), three buildings have subsequently achieved this rating. The ITC Centre (of ITC Ltd.) in Gurgaon became the second building in the country to achieve a Platinum rating from the USGBC last year, followed by the Grundfos Building (of Grundfos India) in Chennai, which achieved Gold certification from the USGBC this year. The Wipro Software Development Centre in Gurgaon is the next Green Building coming up. It has already submitted the necessary documentation and is well on its way to achieving the Platinum rating from the USGBC in the near future. There are several other prestigious installations coming up across the country, with North Delhi Power Ltd. (NDPL) also vying for this prestigious certification. Needless to say, the CII-Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre has played an important role in the above buildings achieving these prestigious awards.
While Platinum or Gold ratings are laudable achievements, it is enough for a building to be simply "Certified" as a Green Building, as even that goes a long way in protecting the environment. Recognising this, several corporate giants in the country such as Tatas, Wipro, etc. have now taken the decision to ensure that all future constructions will be Green Buildings. Some of the proposed Green Buildings that have already been registered with the USGBC and which will be rated as Platinum, Gold, Silver or Certified in the next two years are:
It is heartening to note that property developers such as the Rahejas, the Hiranandanis and M/s. Lavasa Corporation in Pune, have taken up the Green cause seriously. In order to propagate the idea of Green Buildings not only among property developers, but also among material manufacturers and suppliers in the construction industry in the country, the CII-Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre organises the Green Building Congress each year, which receives strong backing from national and international delegates. The USGBC has participated in each of these Green Business Congresses. The third CII-Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Congress 2005 was organised from 14 to 17 September, 2005 in New Delhi. The first two Congresses, held in 2003 and 2004 at Hyderabad, were a huge success. H.N. Daruwalla CII Green
